The knight is normally represented by a horse‘s head and neck. Each player starts with two knights. The Knights movement is the most unique of all the pieces. It moves two squares horizontally or vertically, and then one square vertically or horizontally, making an L shaped movement. The Knight is also the only piece that can “jump” other pieces on the board and this makes it a valuable piece in situations where there a many pieces near by.
A knight is best located on areas of the board where opponents pieces are clustered or close together. The knight is the only piece that can move at the beginning of the game before a pawn. Knights typically see battle before bishops and almost always sooner than the rooks and the queen.
The Knight is the only piece that can be in an attack position that affords the opposing piece no counter attack (except for another knight of course).
